The faculty of the Department of Surgery appreciates your interest in our Residency Training Program.  In today’s rapidly changing and challenging environment, you are confronted with the difficult task of selecting a surgical training program that will best prepare you for the complexities and demands of our specialty.

As you evaluate the alternatives, we invite you to consider the outstanding educational experience offered by the Hospital of Saint Raphael.   We are a Yale-affiliated community teaching hospital renowned in the region for excellence in patient care and medical education.  The Hospital is an integral part of the neighborhood, city, and region it serves.  Residency training is deeply ingrained in the hospital’s tradition and purpose.  Our faculty members are outstanding teachers committed to helping residents reach their full potential, and residents at the Hospital of Saint Raphael are considered important members of the medical team.  The combination of an outstanding community hospital in a busy Atlantic coast urban setting with resources of one of the world’s finest universities present residents with unusual personal and professional opportunities.

Medical education and service to the community are the heart and soul of our Hospital’s mission.  The teaching environment at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, with its wide range of both ambulatory and acute care, provides the basis for a quality residency experience.  We are a certified level 2 trauma center with an Emergency Department that annually serves over 9,000 patients with trauma-related injuries, giving surgical residents the opportunity to function as a primary surgeon in evaluating trauma and treating emergency surgical conditions.  The average chief resident performs more than 700 cases during the five years of training and more than 200 cases as chief surgical resident.

Residents participate in research projects guided by faculty and peers on the Research Council Committee. All categorical residents are required to complete one research project with submission for publication or presentation.  The Hospital of Saint Raphael's residents regularly present their research at local and regional medical meetings.

I invite you to become part of this great tradition.  If you match with the Hospital of Saint Raphael through the National Residency Matching Program, you will enjoy one of the finest educational experiences available in one of the country’s finest hospitals.  On behalf of the entire faculty we appreciate your interest in the Hospital of Saint Raphael.
