The first two years include the primary components of general surgery and rotations through the following subspecialty services: vascular, SICU, orthopedics, plastics, and pediatric surgery. Three quarters of the third year is spent on general surgery services; the remaining quarter is a two month transplant rotation and a one month elective. Residents spend their fourth and fifth years on general surgery services; fifth year residents function as chief residents, satisfying the requirements for eligibility to the American Board of Surgery. Ninety percent of the five years of training are spent on the surgical services of the Hospital of Saint Raphael. Extramural rotations are done in Pediatrics (Connecticut Children’s Medical Center), Transplant (Hartford Hospital) and Burns (Bridgeport Hospital).
