| At the end of each rotation all residents receive a written evaluation by each attending and the Chief Resident on the respective service. The evaluation reflects ACGME core competencies. (medical knowledge, patient care, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems based practice). Also, residents evaluate attendings and rotations. Peer-to-peer evaluations afford residents opportunities to assess their colleagues. The Department meets with each resident no less than twice each academic year to provide a written summary of their performance.

Also, surgery residents must successfully complete the written in-service training examination (ABSITE) sponsored by the American Board of Surgery. Practice oral review sessions are conducted every month and a practice oral examination with faculty surgeons from other institutions is held in the spring.
